The Conestoga River was named the 2026 Pennsylvania River of the Year by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers, recognizing its vital role in the Lancaster community and regional ecosystem. In celebration, the Conestoga River Club will offer daily river float experiences during Lancaster Water Week, held from June 6 through 13. The floats provide opportunities for community members to experience the beauty and importance of the river firsthand while connecting with nature.
The Conestoga River supplies approximately 40 percent of Lancaster City’s public water and carries away treated wastewater, making its health essential to the region’s sustainability. Now in its 10th year, Lancaster Water Week features educational programs, outdoor recreation and conservation-focused activities designed to increase awareness of local waterways.
“Spending time on the river offers restorative benefits, as time in nature and mindful breathing practices are known to support stress reduction, improve mood and promote overall well-being,” shares Malinda Harnish Clatterbuck, executive director of Conestoga River Club and owner of M. Harnish Counseling.
