Funny Farm Apiaries, in Mertztown, is offering hands-on Beekeeper Experiences that allow visitors to suit up and experience the world of a live hive. Established by Wendy Fujita in 2016, this unique apiary provides hands-on beekeeping experiences, educational bee talks and mentorship opportunities for veterans and first responders.

During the Beekeeper Experience, participants wear protective gear and enter an active hive to observe inspections and learn what beekeepers look for while caring for colonies. The experience lasts 45 minutes to one hour and includes discussion about honeybee behavior and hive health. Additional offerings include Bee Talks featuring observation hives for safe, close-up viewing, as well as extended Hive & Honey tours that provide immersive learning and honey sampling.

Fujita credits beekeeping with supporting her own mental wellness and emphasizes community engagement and accessible education as central to the apiary’s work. Through hands-on interaction with bees, participants gain practical skills and a deeper appreciation for the calming connection found in working with nature.
