Lancaster welcomes the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy with a Grand Opening Weekend on May 1 and 2, 2026, where guests can enjoy free community events and get a first look at this new, world-class museum.

This new museum from Lancaster History explores the interwoven lives of Stevens, a 19th-century political leader; and Smith, his housekeeper, a trailblazing Black businesswoman and an individual of extraordinary perseverance. Through immersive exhibits, media experiences and educational programs, the Center highlights their lives and accomplishments, honoring their roles in Lancaster County’s history.

The weekend begins on Friday with a free ribbon-cutting event featuring special guests, followed Saturday by a Community Block Party with live music, food trucks, hands-on activities for all ages, local vendors, and free timed entry to the museum. Families and friends can learn about Lancaster’s abolitionist history, engage with historians, and celebrate the Center’s new role as a crossroads for history and democracy.

Location: 13-15 E. Vine St., Lancaster. For more information, call 717-392-4633 or visit StevensAndSmithCenter.org.
