Pasa Sustainable Agriculture has announced the reinstatement of a $59 million contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture after a year of negotiations and legal appeals. The original five-year agreement, part of the federal Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities Program, had been terminated shortly after a change in administration, disrupting conservation efforts and forcing layoffs within the organization.
With the contract restored, Pasa has rehired about half of the 60 employees that were laid off and will continue supporting conservation projects, farm business development and marketing assistance for farmers. Although some climate and equity-related prioroties were removed during renegotiation, the renewed funding will still allow significant progress on land stewardship efforts.
The initiative aims to assist approximately 2,000 small farmers across 16 states and tribal lands with conservation practices, such as planting trees in pastures for animal shade and numerous soil health practices.
