As a certified functional medicine practitioner, Donna Kulp, DC, DCBCN, IFMCP, has been integrating functional medicine and nutrition with chiropractic care for more than 34 years. Her practice, Kulp Chiropractic Nutrition and Wellness Center, in Reading, offers a functional wellness approach that prioritizes identifying the root causes of disease and restoring balance through personalized nutrition and lifestyle strategies.
Drawing on decades of experience in nutrition and wellness, Kulp provides science-based nutrition and functional medicine care designed to support long-term health improvements for her patients.
A Journey Rooted in Personal Experience
Kulp’s interest in wellness began with her own health struggles. “My own personal health issues started at a young age. I needed to find out why I was sick all the time,” she reflects.
After years of searching for answers, she experienced a breakthrough thanks to alternative health practices and discovered that wellness depended not only on what she ate, but also on what she avoided. This realization set her on a lifelong path toward better health and inspired her professional focus.
Kulp opened her practice in 1992, initially concentrating on chiropractic care. Over time, she expanded her expertise, earning a diplomate in clinical nutrition, certification as a functional medicine practitioner from the Institute of Functional Medicine and certification in functional oncology. With this broader knowledge base, she developed a more integrated approach to care that addresses the body as a whole. Today, nutrition plays a central role in her practice, helping patients not only relieve symptoms, but restore health on multiple levels.
Functional Medicine and Nutrition
Functional medicine is a patient-centered approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of disease rather than simply managing symptoms. The model considers genetics, environment and lifestyle factors, allowing practitioners to develop customized plans that target the root causes of health issues.
Through consultations and physical examinations, Kulp determines which testing may be appropriate. Evaluations may include comprehensive blood analysis, along with stool, saliva, hormone levels and genetic testing to identify deficiencies and sensitivities.
Based on those findings, she develops personalized nutrition plans that may include a specific diet plan, supplements and lifestyle changes tailored to each patient’s needs. Kulp regularly works with individuals experiencing premenstrual syndrome, hormone imbalance, gut and bowel issues, autoimmune conditions, headaches and other chronic health concerns.
Education as a Foundation for Lasting Health
Education plays a crucial role in Kulp’s approach, and she believes empowering patients with knowledge about their health is essential for long-term success.
“The biggest factor is that patients need to take accountability, follow directions and incorporate change,” she shares. “I provide them with education material on why and how to implement changes into their lives, and I’ll give directions on all we discuss. The goal is to make the plan workable for their lifestyle.”
Through this approach, patients often improve the function of key systems such as metabolism, digestion and immune health, experiencing benefits that extend far beyond the relief of pain or discomfort.
“My philosophy is to work with the body in the least invasive way possible,” Kulp explains. She encourages patients to take an active role in maintaining their health. “We need to treat health care as our personal responsibility and take action. Don’t wait until it is broken to incorporate preventative care—the sooner you start, the more likely you will have wellness for a longer period and live a healthier, happier life.”
Looking Ahead
As her practice continues to grow, Kulp is focused on expanding her nutrition services to reach more people seeking solutions for chronic health concerns.
“The future is about continuing to work on educating patients towards taking responsibility for their health, one person at a time.”
