Although the holidays are a time for joy and abundance, they can evoke diverse feelings of grief, depression and anxiety for many people. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that 39.8 percent of adults in Pennsylvania experience anxiety or depression, and 64 percent of those diagnosed with mental illness experience a worsening of symptoms during the holidays.

However, there are a number of ways to cope with this seasonal situation. An awareness of self-care options is important, and research shows that movement and quality nutrition can help ease symptoms. Planning a regular enjoyable group exercise class is a great way to develop a beneficial schedule. Yoga classes, for instance, encompass physical motion, breathwork and meditation that can combat stress and anxiety in several ways.

Volunteering can alleviate feelings of loneliness, as self-esteem is increased by working with others toward a shared goal. Also setting boundaries on time and finances prevent overextending our personal resources relating to social commitments and gift exchanges, while still mindfully honoring the people that are most important to us.

Thoughtful material gifts from the heart are important, but sometimes individuals may need more help. Try to monitor their emotions and substance use, and reach out to a medical advisor if needed. Remember that the 988 Suicide Crisis Hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for those experiencing emotional distress.
