 Natural Awakenings Lancaster-Berks

Local Family Launches Meat-Alternative Food Line

Neat, an all-natural pecan and garbanzo bean-based replacement for animal protein, is currently sold online and available at Lemon Street Market, in Lancaster, and the Stauffers of Kissel Hill stores on Lititz Pike, in Lititz, and on Rohrerstown Road, in Lancaster. Phil and Laura Lapp, the product’s creators, say that they are in talks with several large national and regional grocery store chains and hope to distribute their products more widely soon.

The gluten- and soy-free meat alternative comes in three flavors—original, Italian and Mexican—and does not require refrigeration. Each 5.5-ounce package, which retails from $3.99 to $4.99, is mixed with water and eggs or egg replacement before browning in a skillet. The prepared product resembles ground beef in texture and flavor and provides the same amount of protein as ground beef without the saturated fat.
