Stephen Schwartz, M.D., a board-certified emergency room physician, and Alma Schwartz, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician, owners of Tree of Life Health & Wellness Center, in Lancaster, have acquired a new technology for conducting light therapy for appropriate patients in conjunction with other treatments. Light therapy is thought to affect brain chemicals linked to mood, and can be used to help alleviate depression and sleep disorders, as well as manage pain. It also has been used to treat skin conditions such as acne.

Mellen-Thomas Benedict designed the light therapy technology following a well-documented event in 1982 when, after suffering from a terminal illness, he showed no vital signs for an hour and a half and was pronounced dead. Benedict returned to his body with a complete remission of the disease, bringing back with him information that he used to design the machines, which deliver a previously unavailable type of healing through light.

The Schwartzes practice holistic medicine in addition to Western medicine. Both physicians also have earned diplomas in Traditional Chinese Medicine—medical acupuncture from Xiamen University, in China.
