Local Studio Brings Yoga to Africa

Evolution Power Yoga, in Lancaster, will host a daylong event, February 16, to raise funds for the Africa Yoga Project, a nonprofit, founded in 2007, that educates, empowers and elevates yoga students and teachers that come from impoverished backgrounds in Kenya. The project now boasts more than 250 community yoga programs in 80 locations reaching more than 5,000 developing yogis per week. The day will begin with family yoga activities from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by 108 sun salutations from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The festivities culminate with a Penzi Global Celebration from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.; penzi is the Swahili term for love.

Local instructor Michelle Newman will participate in order to raise a portion of the proceeds for her own AYP campaign. Later this year, Newman will accompany a group of teachers to Africa in order to train people to teach children's yoga.

Yoga delivers a wide range of benefits, including personal empowerment, emotional healing and physical health. The teacher training has also introduced a foundation for community support by enhancing open dialogue and introducing principles of personal responsibility and service.
