 Natural Awakenings Lancaster-Berks

Bountiful Berries: Foraging the Fruits of Summer

Deepen your relationship with the local landscape by learning the foundations of safe, ethical, and reciprocal foraging. While exploring seasonal wild foods, we'll learn about local ecology, plant ID, and our shared history of human-plant connection.

Spend any time outdoors in the summer, and you’re sure to encounter all sorts of wild fruits. From hiking trails and forest edges to urban landscapes, the spaces around us are teeming with juicy, possibly snackable morsels available no other time of year. When we come across any wild fruit, many of us can’t help but wonder–can I eat it?

Summer’s common fruits and berries offer great entry points for learning how to identify and engage with edible wild foods. Whether you’re curious about foraging and want a safe way to get started, or you’re an experienced forager looking to hone your identification skills, this presentation will survey many of the abundant and beloved wild fruits we can eat this time of year.

With a focus on the Mid-Atlantic, we’ll discuss:

  • General tips for foraging safely and ethically,
  • Key identifying features of seasonal edible fruits and berries,
  • Inedible and toxic lookalikes, and ...
  • The historic ways people have engaged with foods that grow naturally in our landscapes.

Fruits are made to be eaten. Join us to learn how you can partake in the free abundance summer has to offer us, and how you can sweeten your relationship with the land along the way.
