Sophia Says Mindfulness Teaching Cards

Lauren Sophia Kreider, mother, wife, writer and bereavement counselor, created Sophia Says Mindfulness Teaching Cards, a project that teaches young children ages 6 to 10 and up, basic mindfulness concepts. With the guidance of an adult, the cards can be used both in groups as well as in one-on-one encounters with a child. Children are encouraged to think about each concept and practice them in their daily lives. The cards can be used by children with little to no exposure to mindfulness concepts and also contain an advanced phase for those children who are already familiar with mindfulness.

With beautiful illustrations that are gender and racially diverse, each card has a picture depicting a child practicing one of the mindfulness concepts, which include: Compassion, Pause, Breathe, Mindful Walking, Mindful Eating, Gratitude, Self-Talk, Mantra, Heart Center, Meditation, Yoga and Present Moment. The back side of each card features an age-appropriate definition, several reflective questions to invite conversation and reflection between the child and adult and activities for the child to practice the concept. A monthly practice chart is included to keep track of the concepts and encourage ongoing practice.

“Mindfulness and meditation have become profound healers in my life,” shares Kreider. “When I had my son five years ago, I knew I wanted to teach him the tools of mindfulness for coping with his feelings and with life. The cards are a way of teaching children how to be peaceful, manage uncomfortable thoughts and feelings and have kind, compassionate relationships and appreciation for the world around us.”

The teaching cards will be available for purchase online until November 16.
