The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. As a part of the endocrine system, its main job is to produce thyroxine, a vital hormone that controls the body’s metabolism, or the use of energy by the body. This hormone also plays an important role in the function of the heart, muscles, bones, brain and digestive system.

When the thyroid isn’t working properly, it can impact the whole body. Dysregulation of the thyroid can lead to the production of too much (hyperthyroidism), too little (hypothyroidism), or the improper use of thyroid hormones in the body. These conditions can lead to inflammation, a change in heart rate, dysregulated body temperature, fatigue, hair loss, depression, anxiety and weight changes, among other symptoms.

To determine if the thyroid is functioning properly, a provider will conduct a physical exam and order bloodwork and/or imaging of the thyroid. A functional medicine or holistic doctor may want to take a deeper look at the endocrine system as a whole, and may include some specialty tests to rule out other root causes.

Thyroid issues may be supported with natural medicine such as minerals and nutrients specific for thyroid health, and herbal medicine to help balance thyroid levels naturally. Thyroid conditions may need to be treated with medications to stimulate or slow the process of hormone production. The use of chiropractic care can also help by improving the health and function of the nervous system, and thus communication between the thyroid gland and the rest of the body.

A diet rich in iodine is important in the proper functioning of the thyroid. The thyroid absorbs iodine from the bloodstream and transforms it into thyroid hormones. Foods rich in iodine include fish, shellfish, poultry and even water.  Supplements can also help ensure that the body is getting enough and properly using iodine, however, this should be managed by a trained healthcare provider.
